Accompany us now on a short mathematical journey through the native water treasury...
Austria, along with Iceland, Norway and Sweden, is among the continent’s richest countries in water resources.
A part of the precious element evaporates, and so the entire utilizable water resources total to some 84 billion m3 per year.
One third thereof accounts for the ground water. 99 percent of the population is supplied with spring and ground water. The percentage of purified water amounts to just one percent and is very slight in comparison to that of many other European states. Between 1993 and 1998 approximately €7.9 million were invested in water pollution prevention and in drinking water protection. Austria has 43,000 hectares of surface water: lakes, rivers, streams, ponds. That corresponds to about 0.5 percent of the total surface area. The network of running waters stretches across approximately 100,000 km.
There are some 9,000 lakes in Austria. 6,000 of these are natural, the rest are artificially created. 27 of the natural lakes have a surface area of more than 1 km2.
The largest lake - is Lake Neusiedl with an Austrian surface share of 225 km2. Its total surface area is 321 km2, 28 percent of which is on Hungarian soil. With around 2000 sun hours in the year the lake can also be considered the lake richest in sun of Austria. Although Lake Constance, with a surface area of 539 km2, is larger, however only 26 km of its bank is located on Austrian soil, which corresponds to 10 percent of the lake’s entire waterside length.
The largest lake on Austrian territory is the Attersee (46.2 km2) followed by Traunsee (24.4 km2), Lake Werther (19.3 km2), Mondsee and Wolfgangsee (14.2 km2) as well as Millstätter See (13.2 km2).
The highest lake is located in Sölden. Schwarzsee lies 2,799 m above sea level.
The warmest lake - is Klopeinersee in Carinthia. In summer it reaches a temperature of 28 to 29 degrees Celsius.
The coldest lake - can be found in Tirol. The water of Achensee is seldomly warmer than 18 degrees Celsius and is one of the coldest large lakes used for bathing.
The highest and warmest lake - is the Weissensee. At 929 m above sea level it warms up to 24 degrees in the summer!
The most lakes in one federal province can be found in Carinthia: 1270 still waters, including 200 bathing lakes with drinking water quality.
The smallest lake, with a surface area of just 1.1 hectares is the Fasanen See in Himberg south of Vienna.
The lake with the greatest depth is Traunsee, which is 191 m deep.
The shallowest lake is Lake Neusiedl with a maximum depth of 1.5 – 1.8 meters.
Summer in Austria was invented for kids. Well, and maybe a little for their parents, too. For who doesn't enjoy sports, action, fun and games? "Boredom" is an unknown term here. for in Austria both big and small get their money's worth. Lots of action and sports to the heart's desire, and town and countryside adventures make your holidays an unforgettable experience. Open-air museums, zoos, fairy tale castles, shopping sprees and adventure trails await boys and girls, and their moms and dads, too. and if you think that's all, then you're greatly mistaken.
When was the last time you swam in drinking water? Of the many summer pleasures for which Austria is a synonym, water sports and bathing are just one. For those who feel as much in their element in (or on) the water as on land, this country is endowed with every imaginable natural resource, from bathing lakes (water quality rating: drinking water!) to crystal-clear mountain torrents for the thrills and spills of white-water sports.
There’s also plenty happening on the lakeside beaches in southern Austria. Guests of all ages have endless fun in and by the water of, for instance, Wörther See – just one of Carinthia’s many bathing lakes – or one of the lakes in Salzkammergut, where the mountainsides and the pastures come right down to the lake shore. Austrian summers can be very hot, and a splash in the lukewarm water makes the ideal refreshment. Often you can dive in straight from the lakeside hiking path. But the best places for real swimming are the beaches.
Even on cloudy days you don’t have to forego your daily swim: many resorts have indoor pools, with endlessly long chutes, artificial waterfalls and wave machines thrown in. The sheer variety of Austria’s holidays by the water needs to be seen to be believed.
