Wrigley Field History
Wrigley Field is a historic baseball stadium located in Chicago, Illinois. It is the home of the Chicago Cubs, one of the oldest and most storied teams in Major League Baseball (MLB). Here is a brief overview of Wrigley Field's history:
- Wrigley Field was originally built in 1914 as Weeghman Park for the Chicago Whales, a team in the Federal League, a now-defunct third major league.
- The park was designed by architect Zachary Taylor Davis and had a capacity of around 14,000 fans.
- After the Federal League folded, the Chicago Cubs purchased the ballpark and moved in for the 1916 season. The park was renamed Cubs Park.
- In 1926, chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. purchased the Cubs and renamed the park Wrigley Field in his own honor.
- In 1937, Wrigley Field became the last major league ballpark to install lights for night games.
