East Gippsland region of Victoria

To find Metung you leave the Princes Highway about 30 kms east of Bairnsdale, and with that, you leave the rush and noise far behind you. Drive along the side of the gentle Tambo River, past grazing cattle and tall gums and you'll find your sense of expectation rising. Then, as you enter the village, your eye catches a sweep of blue bay, a pelican takes flight, boats bob at anchor, and the locals smile.

Metung is 3 1/2 hours drive east of Melbourne, 5 hours drive from Canberra and 9 hours from Sydney (via Canberra). A train service runs from Melbourne to Bairnsdale with connecting coach to Swan Reach. Some accommodation businesses will pick you up at Swan Reach. Nungurner is about 10 minutes drive from Metung, towards Lakes Entrance.

At Metung Hotel we specialise in weddings and functions. Your options are only limited by your and our imagination. Draw on our experience and we will undertake to provide you with courteous and efficient service and provide you with an affordable option. Your food and beverage choices are unlimited and are selected by yourself in consultation with us.

When you want to really unwind, drop a line, daydream over the water until that hungry fish bites. It's likely to be a bream or mullet - good to catch, great to eat. So bring along your fishing gear (or you can hire it at the village), and don't forget the surf rod for some great ocean fishing, too. Everyone walks in Metung. That's because the views are so breathtaking, you need time to take them in. Stroll along the back beach, or along the shores of Bancroft Bay. A walk works wonders in helping you to relax.

Close by is the Tambo River, the Colquhoun State Forest, the Mitchell River National Park, and delightful places like Fairy Dell, Lake Bunga and the Den of Nargen. Metung has a yacht club, bowling club, tennis courts and billiards at the pub. And don't forget your joggers - there are great views along the way. Then close by, there's golf, an indoor pool and an excellent gym.

Metung and the surrounding area is renowned for its fine art galleries and craft centres. Some of Australia's leading artists are here - from silver and goldsmithing, to print making, painting, wood sculptures, glass and pottery. You can take home a gem to remember your holiday. Metung's place of blue water and green, tree-lined shores by day, then golden sunsets and silver starry skies. Colours that make you feel at ease.

Breakfast in the sun, takeaways for lunch, dinner at a fine restaurant, or a pub meal overlooking the Bay, you'll find all this in Metung and you'll be delighted by the quality and range of the food. A wonderful range of seafood, local wines, Gippsland cheese, home smoked bacon, barbecues on the village green, and - for the kids - piping hot fish and chips. More restaurants than you'd expect in such a tiny village. The delicious smell of freshly baked bread, salt in the air, gum trees on a hot summer day, and the clean crispness of the evening. Breathe deeply, it's healthy.

The gently atmosphere enfolds, the sea breeze refreshes, a comfortable bed at the end of the day is sheer luxury. Metung will assault your sense of touch in the nicest way. When you stay in Metung, you'll really feel at home. From the first 'welcome', to the thoughtful special touches during your stay, you'll know you're among friends. Beautiful environments have a way of attracting wonderfully creative people, and Metung is no exception. Painting, pottery, jewellery - we even have a fine craft chocolate maker! The Metung boardwalk is a new addition to the village. It is a delightful way to stroll - safely - along the edge of Bancroft Bay, or to set up your deck chair for a spot of fishing. The walk takes 20-30 minutes, but you'll probably take longer as you stop to enjoy the view of Bancroft Bay. Check out all the boats in the Metung marina, and wonder at 'Legend Rock' - a large meteorite in the water with an aboriginal legend.

Watch out for the resident sea eagles and kingfishers as you walk along. The dirt road along the shores of the back beach is also delightful for walking. There are other lovely bushwalking trails through the Colquhoun Regional Park, and a rail trail along the old Bairnsdale to Orbost railway line. Nyerimilang - about 10 kilometres east of Metung - offers picnic grounds with barbecues, walking trails and spectacular lake views. Other national parks in the region worth exploring include the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park, The Lakes National Park, Croajingolong National Park and the Snowy River National Park. Buchan Caves, about 1 1/2 hours drive away also has picnic grounds and walking trails as well as the caves.

It's easy to go fishing in Metung: the boardwalk provides an excellent platform for fishing in Bancroft Bay, or there are public jetties in the village centre and at the back beach. There's also a public jetty at Nungurner from which you can fish. Take a boat to fish the deeper holes for mulloway or flathead, or try the nearby Tambo River - famous for its bream. A boat trip to the Barrier Landing will give you access to ocean fishing, where salmon catches are common. Between January and April each year, the prawns run - some years the catches are huge.

Kings Cove Metung Golf Course was designed by international golf course architect Ted Parslow. The course has 9 greens, with two sets of tees on each hole, most of which significantly alter length and play the second time around. We look forward to seeing you at Kings Cove Metung for your next round of golf.

Metung is perfect for walking , jogging and cycling. Around the water's edge the land is flat (and the views lovely), but if you want hills, they're also on offer in Metung. The Metung Yacht Club and Seasons Resort & Bar at Kings Cove Club also offer dining. Riviera Nautic at the entrance to the village has a small espresso bar. Or purchase some chops and sausages and make use of the public facilities on the village green, overlooking Bancroft Bay and watched by a flock of pelicans.

The centre of Metung Village is delightful. True to village form, there's only a handful of shops, but they offer everything you could possibly need. There is a general store (a good range of groceries, fresh produce, wine and beer), a post office, baker, chemist, chandlery/boat shop, and a collection of lovely gift and homeware shops.
