History
Sovereign Lake is a cross-country ski area located in the Monashee Mountains near Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. The area has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s.
In the early 1900s, the area was used as a trapping and hunting ground by the local First Nations people. In the 1930s, the area was used for logging and mining, and in the 1940s, the Canadian Army used the area for training exercises.
In the 1960s, the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club was formed and the area became a popular destination for cross-country skiing. The club established a network of trails and in 1974, they hosted the first Canadian National Cross-Country Ski Championships at Sovereign Lake.
In the years since, the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club has continued to develop the area, adding more trails and facilities, and hosting numerous regional and national events. Today, Sovereign Lake is one of the premier cross-country skiing destinations in Canada, with over 50 kilometers of trails, a biathlon range, and a lodge with a pro shop and café.
