Living the island life

Sanibel & Captiva Islands is the best known of the more than 100 barrier islands that hug the Gulf Coast of Lee County. About 400 species of seashells are found there. Sanibel is also a haven for a host of art galleries and unique shops, two theaters, and dozens of fine restaurants. The island has no traffic lights, and no buildings are taller than four stories. Almost one-third of the island is dedicated to a national wildlife refuge, where native birds, animals and plants abound.

Get lost in our 330-acre resort at the tip of tropical Captiva Island. Love tennis? We have 18 courts, a tennis pro staff and are among Tennis Magazine's top 50 resorts. Golf? Our 9-hole waterfront course is one of the most scenic in the country, and our 18-hole course on nearby Sanibel Island is a real challenge. Our deep-water yacht harbour can dock boats up to 120 feet, and the bayside marina houses smaller craft, plus powerboat rentals and fishing, shelling and boat excursions. South Seas is also home to the Steve Colgate Offshore Sailing School, not to mention manatees, dolphin, great blue herons, loggerhead turtles, cormorants and a full-time resort naturalist to help guests appreciate and learn about this tropical paradise.

South Seas Resort offers a variety of luxury accommodations ranging from deluxe hotel rooms to spacious one-, two- and three-bedroom villas complete with fully equipped kitchens. These accommodations are strategically places throughout the resort's 330 acres, with views of the beach, the bay, the marina, the tennis center, or golf course. All accommodations were built in harmony with nature - and no building is taller than the tallest tree.

The 17,000 square-foot Plantation Conference Center is all on one level, with meeting and banquet rooms connected by large hallways or landscaped walkways. Captiva Ballroom, the 5,000 square foot showcase at the Center, provides a roomy tropical pre-function area, breakout rooms close by, and an Executive Boardroom that's the envy of many Fortune 500 companies. And, no matter what kind of presentation you have planned, the Ballroom's capabilities are unsurpassed in technology as well as style. A concealed projection booth runs the entire 100-foot length of the facility and across the 50-foot width as well, providing entertainers, speakers, producers and technicians with an endless variety of configurations.

Lindbergh Hall can be divided into three smaller rooms and features a 50-foot covered porch for relaxing between sessions. Flexibility, accessibility and convenience are key features in the center's design. The Useppa Room is a short stroll from Chadwick's and can accommodate 120 people or 3 breakouts of 50 each.

For your peace of mind, South Seas Island Resort offers optional trip-cancellation insurance on all reservations to protect your investment from life's unforeseen circumstances such as illness or injury. This optional fee will appear on your confirmation once you've made the initial deposit on your accommodations. However, should you wish to decline the trip insurance, simply deduct the cost of the premium from your final payment.

For those of you who will be vacationing on the island between May and November, please note that this is hurricane season. Therefore, we recommend that you seriously consider purchasing trip insurance, in the unlikely event of a hurricane, you'll be glad you did. And remember, owners are not required to rebate rent in the event of a voluntary or mandatory hurricane evacuation.

Bikers will enjoy some 21 miles of paved paths on Sanibel Island for cycling, walking and roller-skating. Diners will find restaurants from romantic, white tablecloth elegance to funky outdoor breakfast, burger and beverage places. Art lovers will discover live theater performances, concerts, festivals, exhibitions and nearly 20 galleries.

Fundamentally, though, Sanibel Island and Captiva Island are places to relax. The laid-back attitude of the residents is reflected in people who say "hello" with a smile, hold the door for you and pause to let you enter Periwinkle Way from driveways and side streets. So, bring your casual clothes and a casual attitude, both of which will suit you perfectly on Captiva Island and Sanibel Island.

The local commercial airport is Southwest Florida International (also known as RSW), which also serves Fort Myers, Charlotte and Collier Counties. Depart the airport on Daniels Road and follow the signs to Sanibel and Captiva. (If you are driving on I-75, look for Exit 131 and head west.) You will travel approximately four miles to Summerlin Road. Turn left and continue to the Sanibel Island Causeway.

Lee County, which owns the causeway, charges a $6 round-trip toll for automobiles to use the causeway. The speed limit is strictly enforced at 30 MPH (20 MPH on bridges) for its three-mile ride to Sanibel Island. Thus begins the decompression process that prepares you for the relaxation and renewal you will experience from your vacation stay on Sanibel Island and Captiva Island.
