In 1902, Josef Kostner, the famous Ladino mountain guide, was selected by the DÖAV (German/Austrian Alpine Club) for a Trans-Caucasus expedition. This expedition saw the participation of the most experienced and reliable mountian guides in Europe. In 1912, he purchased the Cappella Hotel and made the touristic development of his native village his lifelong endeavor, at which he worked inexhaustibly. A drink at the bar and some passionate music by Strauss or Chopin. What a lovely evening!
Candlelight, exquisite masterpieces of culinary art, delicacies reflected in the serving tray. Or perhaps quite simply a barbecue in the garden, an aperitif on the terrace, a farmer's meal or ice-cream buffet presented by our kitchen staff.
Fitness and sport (Sauna, fitness room, massages, indoor pool, solarium, hairdresser, sun terrace, boccia court, volleyball, tennis court, children's'playground, lawn lounge). And how about a round of golf? (4 km from the Hotel) - we are charter members of the course. Or a beautiful walk in the woods? Fill yourself with life energy! In winter, just step outside the door. Skis on and you're off.The Sellaronda and the large ski gondola "Superski" are right in front of the Hotel. From the balcony, you con watch the Children's ski school on the hill behind the Hotel.

Did you know that the Dolomiti Superski region took place not only the Olympic winter-games, but also a ski worldcup? Those sport events taked place on 1956 in Cortina and 1970 in Val Gardena. Every year the FIS-ski worldcup races take place on those slopes and other ones in Cortina, Alta Badia and Val Gardena, so that the skiing zone in the Dolomites is the only ski resort where all worldcup-disciplines carried out like down-hill, super-G, giant-slalom and slalom.
South of the Alps, the mountainous belt between the Adige and the Piave, between the Val Pusteria and the Belluno area, is characterized by the mighty peaks of the Dolomites. The most evocative corner of the Dolomites is dominated by the Sella massif. The four Ladin valleys radiate out from the Sella bastion: Val di Fassa, Livinallongo - Fodom, Val Gardena and Val Badia on the north side. The southern part of Val Badia, Alta Badia therefore lies in the heart of the Dolomites. Access to Alta Badia, as well as from the neighboring valleys can also be done from the north, from Val Pusteria.
To experience the great magic of nature of which the great English poet speaks to us, we invite you to explore the richness and variety of the beauties of our valley by walking on one of the many itineraries that Alta Badia offers, from the quiet and sunny walks of the valley bottom to excursions to the more isolated farms and up to climbing and via ferrata.
Entering the realm of nature to breathe fresh and clean air and gather new strength, you will discover every new day how exciting and surprising a stay in the "realm of little things" can be. And it is on these “little things”, such as the song of a bird, the leap of a roe deer, the race of a horse, the melody of the wind and the streams that we would like to attract your attention. Enjoy them with both hands, your holidays will be even more beautiful and will remain a pleasant memory for a long time.
Alta Badia is the ideal place to spend pleasant holidays in the name of nature and movement. In addition to a great choice of walks and excursions of every difficulty and duration, you will also find a wide range of infrastructures for sport and leisure that will make your stay even more complete.
The history of Alta Badia is closely linked to that of the rest of Val Badia. It is believed that Val Badia, as well as the other Ladin valleys, was inhabited by a prehistoric population already in pre-Roman times. In support of this hypothesis there is the monument to the victory in honor of Caesar Augustus which is located near Nice; among the 44 peoples subdued in the Rezia by the Roman armies, the figure of the “Vanienses” is also listed on the monument, who most likely had his residence in today's Val Badia and neighboring valleys. The Sasso S. Croce is in fact named in the first historical documents around the year 1000 "Petra Vanna".
After the Romans conquered the Rezia, our valley remained approx. 500 years under the Roman Empire; in Ciastel and Sotciastel, two hamlets of S. Leonardo/Pedraces tools and weapons were found, which are believed to be the last evidence of an ancient Roman fort. With the beginning of the barbarian invasions, the order and tranquility enjoyed for centuries by the Ladin populations, who at the time occupied much of the Alps, disappeared. Those who managed to escape the devastation and massacres of the Barbarians retreated to the inaccessible side valleys, where they found refuge and a new home; the first campaigns and the first farms in the valley were born.
After the year 1000, Val Badia was divided between the bishopric of Bressanone and the convent of Ciastel Badia. They were years of bitter struggles between the two dominions and of great poverty for the people, who had to participate in the struggle in support of the rulers and was obliged to pay their already meager harvest. In 1636 the plague broke out throughout the Val Badia which claimed numerous victims, the documents report that about half of the population died of the plague. After the secularization of the principality of Bressanone in 1803, Val Badia was incorporated into the Austrian kingdom until 1919 when it was part of the Italian territory.
Alta Badia, thanks to its geographic conformation, offers a wide range of excursions, from walks for the less trained or for families with small children, to longer trips up to excursions for the more experienced mountaineer. Particularly interesting, both from a landscape point of view and for their historical and cultural relevance, are for example the itineraries proposed under. Why not venture out on the Sella Ronda in the summer? The route that in winter is the destination of every skier, in summer is a magnificent challenge for every hiker. The Sella Ronda day pass allows you to use the Sella Ronda lifts and the buses between the four Dolomite passes of Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella and Gardena and to plan the tour in a completely individual way.
The eight "classic" Dolomite high routes are designed for hikers with a lot of breath and with a little time, who will be able to discover the Dolomites comfortably, but in the "old way", without the help of the ski lifts, passing through the valley in the valley and from refuge to refuge. Duration: up to two weeks, with overnight stay in mountain huts and inns. Absolutely carry a large backpack with everything you need; for those who are not practical, there is the risk of sweating a little.
With a very limited use of the mechanical lifts, this "haute route" allows you to make a fantastic ring between the Dolomite groups included in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies, Dolomiti Ampezzane and Puez-Odle Natural Parks. The itinerary was designed to combine the beauty of the places with the historical aspect as it often takes place along the front line that divided Italy from the former Austria-Hungary.
In fact, along the route, tunnels, trenches and bunkers built by the armies that so absurdly opposed each other on these peaks are visible. The commitment required varies according to the variants you choose. The alpine guides usually offer it with two guides per group: one follows the easy itinerary and the other the more difficult one, thus giving participants the daily possibility to choose the commitment of the stage to be covered. The whole group stays overnight in the same shelters.
