Newland History
Newland is a town located in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. The history of Newland dates back to the early 19th century when the area was known as Old Fields. In the early 1800s, the first European settlers arrived in the area, and by the mid-1800s, it had become an important stop along the stagecoach route from Tennessee to North Carolina.
In 1911, the town was officially incorporated as Newland, named after North Carolina Governor William C. Newland. During the early 20th century, the town's economy was largely based on agriculture, timber, and mining.
In the mid-20th century, the town's economy shifted towards tourism and outdoor recreation, with the opening of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the establishment of nearby ski resorts.
Today, Newland is a small but vibrant town with a population of approximately 700 people. It is home to a number of locally-owned businesses and hosts several community events throughout the year, including the annual Avery County Agricultural Fair and the Newland July 4th Parade.
