Knott's Berry Farm
Knott's Berry Farm is a famous theme park located in Buena Park, California, that has a rich and fascinating history. It all started in the early 1920s, when Walter and Cordelia Knott moved to Buena Park and began farming. In 1920, Walter Knott purchased several berry plants from a man named Rudolph Boysen, who had developed a new type of berry by crossing raspberries, blackberries, and loganberries. Knott nurtured the plants and eventually developed his own unique hybrid berry, which he named the boysenberry.
The Knott family began selling their boysenberry products, including pies and preserves, at a roadside stand in the late 1920s. The stand became so popular that Cordelia began serving fried chicken dinners to hungry customers who came from miles around. The popularity of the chicken dinners led to the construction of a restaurant, which opened in 1934 and was named Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant. It is still in operation today and is considered a Southern California landmark.
To keep customers entertained while waiting for their meals, Walter Knott began building a replica ghost town on the property in the late 1930s. The ghost town was a collection of authentic 19th-century buildings, including a blacksmith shop, a jail, and a saloon. The Knotts also began offering stagecoach rides and other entertainment, and the attraction became known as Knott's Berry Place.
In 1940, Walter Knott added a narrow-gauge steam train ride to the park, which proved to be a big hit with visitors. Over the years, the park continued to grow and add new attractions, including roller coasters, water rides, and live shows.
