History

Haig Point is a private, gated community located on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. The island was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before being settled by Europeans in the 18th century. The island was originally known as "Haig's Point," named after John Haig, a wealthy Savannah merchant who purchased the island in 1810.

In the early 20th century, Haig Point was purchased by William P. Baldwin, who developed it as a hunting and fishing retreat. Baldwin built a number of homes on the island, including the main mansion, which is now known as the Strachan Mansion. The mansion was designed by architect John Russell Pope, who also designed the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.

In the 1980s, Haig Point was purchased by the Melrose Company, which developed it as a residential community. The Melrose Company worked to preserve the island's natural beauty and historic structures, and the community now includes a mix of historic homes and new construction.

Today, Haig Point is known for its luxury amenities, including a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, a beach club, a tennis center, and a community equestrian center. The community is accessible only by ferry or private boat, adding to its exclusivity and charm.
