Discovery Square

Discovery Square is a cooperative expansion project undertaken by the Erie Art Museum, the Erie County Historical Society & Museums and the expERIEnce Children's Museum, which was created and built as partof the Discovery Square project. This $20 million fund raising and building project will result in expanded gallery space for the Erie Art Museum, a refurbished History Center, and a 250-seat performance and lecture hall. The three institutions will maintain separate identities and programming schedules, but will be linked architecturally with a common entrance and other shared spaces.

Erie History Center

The Erie County History Center is home to the Cashier's House, the Erie County Historical Museum, and the Erie County Historical Society & Museums Library & Archives. The 1839 Cashier's House, a Greek Revival townhouse, was built as the residence of the Cashier of the Bank of the United States Erie Branch. The Erie County Historical Museum's exhibit "Voices from Erie County History" offers glimpses into Erie County's rich heritage from the days of pre-settlement to the turn of the twenty-first century. The Library & Archives provides assistance to a variety of researchers ranging from students to authors seeking Erie County history information and images.

Erie Otters Hockey

The Erie Otters arrived in Erie in 1996 and feature many of the finest young players in the world. These athletes are destined to become the National Hockey League stars of the future, and they are competing in Erie ... TODAY! The Ontario Hockey League is operated under the sport governing guidelines of the Canadian Hockey League and conforms to the rules and regulations of the National Hockey League. The Canadian Hockey League consists of players between the ages of 16 and 20 and includes teams in the Western Hockey League, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey League.

The OHL consists of twenty teams. The Erie Otters and the Plymouth Whalers are the only members of the League based in the USA. Other teams in the League include the Barrie Colts, Belleville Bulls, Brampton Battalion, Guelph Storm, Kingston Frontenacs, Kitchener Rangers, London Knights, Mississauga IceDogs, North Bay Centennials, Oshawa Generals, Ottawa 67's, Owen Sound Platers, Peterborough Petes, Sarnia Sting, Saulte Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Sudbury Wolves, Toronto St. Michael's Majors and Windsor Spitfires.

Approximately 65 to 70 percent of today's National Hockey League players are graduates of the Canadian Hockey League. The list of graduates includes Wayne Gretzky, Eric Lindros, Ed Jovanovski, Steve Yzerman, Doug Gilmour, Paul Coffey, Ron Francis and Scott Stevens amoung many other well known players.

Since the advent of the NHL Draft in 1969, the Otters' franchise (which was previously located in Hamilton, Brantford, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls) has had more than 120 players drafted by NHL teams — the third most of any junior team in the world. The 1998-99 version of the Erie Otters also features Tim Connolly, who was identified by The Hockey News as the top North American Prospect for the 1999 National Hockey League Draft.

The philosophy is quite simple. The Erie Otters are a community-based hockey team with the management and players dedicated to representing the Erie community. Otters players are involved with many public "otter"graph sessions and the entire team is involved with numerous community and charity events.

Erie Seawolves Baseball

Although the SeaWolves are now the Double A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, the franchise kept its original name and logo. The logo had changed for one season but fans and the general public voted the original logo back in after the 2000 season.

Come watch exciting minor league baseball as the Erie SeaWolves begin their third Eastern League season. The Erie SeaWolves are the AA affiliate to the Detroit Tigers and play at Jerry Uht Park, located next to the Erie Civic Center. The SeaWolves offer more than just good baseball. In between inning promotions such as the H. Jack Langer "Plunger Toss", the Smith's "Wiener catch", and Max and Erma's "Dance For Your Dinner" also provide entertainment for the crowd. Come visit Jerry Uht Park and see how the Erie SeaWolves offer "affordable fun for everyone!"
