The largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras
Coxen's Hole - Locally known as Roatan City is the largest town and the capital of the Bay Islands. Coxen Hole is the major hub for politics on Roatan with the municipal, immigration, court house, hospital clinic, and banks centrally located. Although there are not many tourist attractions in the city there are some very nice gift shops and island restaurants. The rich culture of the island people that make up Coxen Hole makes for a unique atmosphere that most people find very intriguing. The city is also the gateway to Roatan where the ferry boats from the mainland and other Bay Islands arrives. The airport is located on the out skirts of the city that is actually within walking distance if you feel up to exercise. There is regular bus service and taxi service to West End, French Harbor and Oak Ridge. Establish your rates in advance and Ask taxi drivers for a rate sheet.
Oak Ridge
Located on the southern end of the island to the east of French Harbour is Oakridge. The Reef House Resort is located on a small key just across from the main dock at Oakridge. The Reef House does have restaurant service. On the opposite side of Roatan is the Garifuna community of Punta Gorda. Punta Gorda was the first Garifuna settlement in Central America where the Indians were marooned by the British in 1796.
It did receive significant damage during Hurricane Mitch. Locals commemorate their arrival on Roatan with a carnival every year on April 12. The paved road at the Oakridge cut off becomes a dirt road and leads further west towards Camp Bay, Port Royal, Old Port Royal and other communities. These communities are lacking in infrastructure of any kind and therefore appropriate only for the adventuresome tourist. If you venture to the far eastern end, you will only find great scenery and isolated beaches.
Paya Beach is a very exclusive restaurant in a very beautiful setting. To get there, you must continue on the dirt road leading east from the Oak Ridge to the Punta Gorda detour. Bring your swim suits, as there is a good beach just below the excellent restaurant. Near Paya Bay is Camp Bay, with a large tract of unspoiled, natural white sand beaches. There are no tourist services at Camp Bay but it does have a great beach.
Bonacco Town
Touring the Town - You can arrange for a tour of Bonacco Town, located on its own cay, just off the island. The town is a strange mix of the old-world and the new. Many refer to it as the "Venice of the Caribbean" because so much of it is now built over the water. It consists of less than 100 acres, yet it is home to more than 4,000 people. Many houses are two and three stories, clinging to the cay via stilts. Most of what the locals refer to as "streets" are five-foot wide cement walks, while others are wooden walkways on stilts. Ocean tides continually sweep through canals that cut through the village. Friendly Bonacco Town is a "must-see". Bring plenty of color film.
Hiking to the Waterfall - A 15-minute speed-boat ride in our 25-foot Tiburonera brings you to a beautiful beach where the trailhead is located. Our guide will accompany you on a 25-minute hike through the lush jungle to the only waterfall in The Bay Islands. Here you can stand at the base of the falls for a refreshing shower.
Snorkeling - Guanaja's reefs are home to over 90% of all species of coral and sponges found in the world. There are over thirty, more-than-perfect snorkeling locations, where the coral and marine life comes up to within a few feet of the surface. Guanaja's reefs and waters are part of a marine park - in pristine condition.
Ocean Kayaking - Kayaking along Guanaja's shoreline is fun and a great way to explore the island independently. Find and visit small, untouched beaches that even small boats can't get to. Guided expeditions can be arranged at your request, if you prefer.
Hiking - Right out our back door is a twenty-minute hike along a marked trail to a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea. Guanaja is a mountainous island with many trails of any length you wish -- Many spectacular views.
Fishing - Take a day off from diving to go fishing for Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo or Tuna with Captain Hans on the Miss Laura, or if you're a fly fisherperson, try your hand at bonefishing in one of the various saltwater flats situated around the island. We promote catch-and-release.
Water Skiing - Get a different view of our island as you ski over the crystal-clear waters along the beaches.
Dancing and "Bar-Hopping." - Friday night is THE night for the locals to let go and begin to enjoy the weekend by dancing and partying at the local discos. Boats are available to take you to enjoy the friendly nightlife with the locals in Bonacco Town.
Side Trip to the Ruins at Copan - Visit the truly beautiful ruins of the Mayan city of Copan, on the Honduras Mainland. Arrangements can be made through us to visit this truly mistifying, relatively newly-discovered site. People say that just stepping down into the "courtyard" gives them a feeling of tranquility - really!
