The Bay View Hotel is suberbly situated on Weymouth Esplanade just across the road from the sandy beach and within just two to three minutes walk of the Old Harbour and Town Centre. Over nine centuries of unique history make Weymouth the ideal location for a holiday of discovery.

Weymouth is a coastal town steeped in history and surprisingly was known during the 1500s as Melcombe Regis. While holidaying here you and your family will certainly not want to miss exploring the port where the bubonic plague, known as the Black Death, entered England, and from where a flotilla of English ships set sail in 1588 to attack the Spanish Armada.

Take a tour of the countryside and you’ll encounter a massive and impressive chalk drawing of King George III aboard his noble steed, both of whom regularly visited Weymouth Bay in the late 1700s. Or pose for a family picture underneath Weymouth’s most famous landmark, the Jubilee Clock, built in 1887 to commemorate fifty years of the reign of Queen Victoria. A visit to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy will allow you to follow in the footsteps of sailing greats such as Sir Ben Ainslie, who won gold for Great Britain when the centre hosted the Olympic sailing events in 2012. Ancient or modern, Weymouth has a history that will delight people of all walks of life.

Music provides the soundtrack to your life and the backdrop to a superbly memorable vacation in Weymouth. And when the sun has set and the lights have taken full effect, the wide variety of pubs and clubs dotted around town provide the perfect entertainment for a night out.

If you’re keen to sit back and relax and listen to live music while you regale the tales and experiences of the day in Weymouth, there are many local music artistes playing the pub scene who are on hand to entertain you with tunes of yesteryear, or the latest chart releases. Alternatively if you’ve a more adventurous spirit and are keen party the night away, a night out in one of Weymouth’s upbeat nightclubs will leave you feeling invigorated. Buskers and street entertainers that frequent the markets and squares of Weymouth deliver the perfect level of family entertainment.

If you love racket sports there are plenty of things to do in Weymouth. Our ace facilities cater for tennis, squash and badminton fans. If you like badminton Weymouth has several courts available you can book at local sports clubs. Weymouth Leisure Centre, near the marina, has facilities for all racquet sports but it may be wise to contact them online in advance.

A fun family past time that gets you out and about in the great outdoors with the wind in your face and an abundance of fresh air in your lungs is a spot of bird watching. With many species of colourful birds that are native to these shores, and others that can only be spotted at certain times of the year, the first things you’ll want to pack for your upcoming holiday are your binoculars and an accompanying bird book. Join a local society for a special guided day out, or just wander around Radipole Nature Reserve, Fleet Lagoon or Lodmoor Reserve where the skies and treetops are constantly alive with teeming flocks of house sparrows, finches, robins and migrating terns. But it’s not just bird watching that attracts nature ramblers to Weymouth. Look carefully and you’re sure to catch a glimpse of a dragonfly darting from a riverbed to one of the wide varieties of plant life that are native to the area. Or if you’re in the right place at the right time, you’ll pick up the flight of a fragile butterfly floating on the sea breeze.

Looking for something a bit different for your party or family to do? Weymouth has a large bowling club, Lakeside Superbowl (MFA Bowl) in St Nicholas Street, near the Multiplex Cinema. This is an extremely popular venue for families and groups of friends to spend an afternoon or evening having lots of fun.

Weymouth and Melcombe Regis Bowls Club can often be seen playing traditional bowls on their green near Weymouth Marina, while Moonfleet 2000 indoor bowls club is located on the edge of ‘The Marsh’ playing fields, tucked away behind Asda, but still within walking distance from the town centre, marina and harbour.

If you do like to be beside the seaside, and you can think of no better way to while away your time on holiday than dropping a fishing line in the water while you admire the scenery and put your bird spotting skills to the test, you’ll feel at peace with the world in Weymouth.

There are so many top-notch river and lake fishing spots to choose from with waters that are well stocked with a variety of fresh water fish that include Carp, Bream, Roach and Rudd. On the other hand, for those anglers that are up for more of a challenge, Weymouth offers some of the most diverse sea angling in Britain and also plays host to many national and international competitions throughout the year. Many of which run in tandem with the annual Dorset Seafood Festival. Talk about the catch of the day. What could be better than handing your freshly caught fish over to the chef of one of the award-winning restaurants in the region and having it returned plated and cooked to perfection? Ready to enjoy with a fine Chardonnay.

Fancy trying you hand at fossil hunting Weymouth? You might even find your very own real dinosaur! Well, a bit of one, anyway. Weymouth sits right in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Jurassic Coast – which stretches from East Devon to East Dorset and holds 185 million years of history in fossils. A walk along the beaches at Charmouth or Lyme Regis is likely to yield the most fossils, but anywhere along the Jurassic Coast, where there are rocks, could be where you make your find – perhaps an ammonite (the round curly ones) or a ‘devil’s finger’ (dino shark’s tooth) or if you are really lucky, part of a 165 million year old Ichthyosaurus!

While you are there, look out for Tout Quarry, on the opposite side of the road, which has been transformed into a sculpture park. While you are up there, a selfie by the Olympic rings is a must! You can learn how to fossil hunt responsibly (so as not to hurt the environment, the irreplaceable history of our planet, or indeed, yourself). As a boy, entrepreneur Mike Hanlon dreamed of a ‘space of absolute wonder’ where fossils could be cared for and shown to the public. In 2021 it is envisioned that Jurassica will open to the public. This promises to be a world-class visitor attraction, showcasing 200 million years of Life on Earth in a glass dome, built in an old stone quarry on the Isle of Portland.

Regardless of how much baggage and beach gear you’re planning on bringing down on holiday, you’ll want to make sure that you leave enough room for the golf clubs. Weymouth plays host to some of the country’s finest 9 and 18-hole golf courses, all of which are unique in layout and set up by their respective green keepers to challenge even the most competent of golfers. Situated amidst some of the most dramatic scenery you’ll find in the UK and indeed the world, including one course that follows the contours of a cliff top overlooking the ocean, a round of golf played with friends and family down this part of the world will be both rewarding and memorable. Golf is a fairly complex sport, so if there are members of the family keen to try their hand at one aspect of the game, but you feel a lengthy golf course is not the place to start, take them all out for a round of adventure golf and share in the fun and laughter.

Regardless of whether you’re new to the art of horse back riding, or you consider yourself somewhat of a seasoned pro, there is no more interesting way to explore the surrounds of Weymouth than from the top of a horse. By virtue of the fact that you are out in the countryside, there is of course a vast array of stables in the area for you to choose from. If you and the family are looking to take a leisurely ride through the countryside, or you happen to be looking to brush up your skills in the paddock for an upcoming equestrian event, your needs will be more than catered for. Come saddle up and undertake clifftop rides along national heritage sites, treks through forest and heathland areas, or explore the network of trails and bridleways that weave through largely un-spoilt countryside. Enjoy a relaxed time with riders of similar experience and on horses and ponies that are calm, easy to control and obedient.

There’s a saying that you can’t be all things to all people. With so much to see and do, there’s bound to be something for you and everyone else in your family to enjoy.

Fill your days wandering around the historic Weymouth harbour from which you can also catch regular and relatively inexpensive cross-channel ferry excursions to the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. Or when the sun has got too much to bare, take a break and shop till you drop along the two shopping streets that boast brand name shops that are akin to those found back home. Many of which serve unique and traditional meat and fish dishes and local brews, sometimes complimented by the soulful tunes of live musicians.

From live bands in the pubs to classical music concerts in the churches; from star-studded shows at Weymouth Pavilion to historical re-enactments in the streets – you’ll be spoilt for choice.
